Wisdom Teeth Removal
The wisdom teeth represent the final set of molars to emerge, typically in the late teens to early twenties. Unfortunately, wisdom teeth complications are very common. Due to lack of jaw space, the wisdom teeth tend to cause more harm than good. At Sunrise Dental and Implant Center, we help our patients monitor these back molars as they grow. If there is a problem, we can perform wisdom teeth removal to help patients with disruptive and even painful oral health issues.
Avoiding Wisdom Teeth Impaction
Problems arrive with wisdom teeth when they grow the wrong direction or there is not enough space in the mouth for their growth. These are large molars, having as many as four roots. If the space where they are meant to grow is too small, they may grow in sideways, partially erupt or get impacted below the gum line. Not only can this create alignment issues but if wisdom teeth are impacted in the gums, the following concerns can arise:
- Infection
- Sinus problems
- Pain
- Swelling or jaw discomfort
When to Remove Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth can be removed proactively or reactively. If the space in the mouth is crowded, it may be best to remove the wisdom teeth proactively to prevent problems. Most impacted wisdom teeth should be removed as they will often cause problems down the road. Some people receive their wisdom teeth with no issues but decide to have them removed later due to challenges keeping them clean and free from decay.
