Teeth sensitivity is a common oral health concern. While not every case is cause for alarm, there is always a reason why your teeth are more sensitive to extreme temperatures than they were before. If you wince in pain at your first morning sip of coffee, or avoid ice cream due to your sensitive teeth, it’s time to let your dentist know. There are things we can do at Sunrise Dental & Implant Center to make your smile more comfortable again.
The Role of Enamel
Exposed dentin is the leading cause of tooth sensitivity. Dentin is the second layer of your tooth, just behind the enamel. Unfortunately, dentin is more sensitive, as it has tiny pathways that lead to your inner tooth pulp, where active tooth nerves reside. As a protective mechanism, your tooth responds with pain when bacteria and hot/cold temperatures come in contact with the inner pulp.
There are many reasons why the dentin layer becomes exposed. Damage to the outer enamel is a leading culprit, but it can also be exposed at the base of the tooth. The roots of your tooth do not have the thick enamel layer because they are intended to be surrounding by gum tissue. However, when the gums recede, the dentin is left unprotected and the tooth can become sensitive.
Common causes for tooth sensitivity include the following:
- Brushing Too Hard
- Untreated Decay
- Enamel Erosion (Acidic drinks/foods)
- Cracked Teeth
- Grinding your Teeth
- Gum Disease/Receding Gums
- Tooth Bleaching
- Natural Aging Process
